TSMC appears to be moving forward as planned with its development of the 2nm chip manufacturing process. Unofficial sources now report that the company is preparing a “pilot” line for manufacturing the technology. In other words, TSMC intends to carry out a test line for manufacturing 2nm wafers.
According to rumors, the world’s largest semiconductor manufacturer will carry out its tests at the Hsinchu Baoshan (Fab 20) facility. If everything goes well, the company intends to have a production capacity of 3,000 to 3,500 wafers per month on this test manufacturing line.
Also according to unofficial sources, TSMC intends to expand this capacity to up to 20,000 to 25,000 2nm wafers per month at this facility by the end of 2025. The numbers could reach up to 60,000 to 65,000 between the end of 2026 and the beginning of 2027 .
Showing great interest from customers in the 2nm process, TSMC will seek to expand its production not only relying on Fab 20. The company should also produce wafers in the N2 process at its facility in Kaohsiung (Fab 22). According to rumors, this other factory should deliver the same production capacity, for a total of 120,000 to 130,000 2nm wafers per month until the beginning of 2027 or even a little earlier.
Demand for 2nm already exceeds 3nm, according to TSMC
The advancement in the development of the new manufacturing process, seeking to deliver a large volume of wafers as soon as possible, is another indication of the popularity of the technology among TSMC customers.
On another occasion, CC Wei, director of the company, stated that the demand for 2nm already exceeds the search for 3nm. Returning to unofficial information, apparently Apple will be the first TSMC partner to take advantage of the new process. But basically all the giants have contracts with the Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturer, including names like AMD, NVIDIA, Intel, etc.

As TSMC races to expand its 2nm production capacity, it will probably only be able to leverage its facilities in Taiwan to do so, as the country’s laws do not allow it to manufacture its most advanced processes outside of home.
