While white electronics can be considered beautiful, over time many of them tend to adopt a very noticeable yellowish tone. As a result, methods known as Retrobright have become especially popular among owners of old consoles — but a video from the Tech Tangents channel shows that, although they work at first, they can make the situation worse in the long run.
As an example of what could happen, the channel used the example of a Dreamcast, a console launched by SEGA. He carried out a test between two pieces of the console — one with and one without the treatment — and compared which one was more obviously yellowed after 10 years.
The result is surprising: the console that did not have its composition changed in 2015 actually turned yellow over time. However, the one who underwent “restoration” with Retrobright has a visibly more intense and uneven color on its surface.
Why do consoles keep turning yellow?
According to the channel’s presenter, retrogamer Shelby Jueden, consoles tend to turn yellow for several reasons. The main one is the result of chemical reactions that happen when a chemical element used to retard fires is oxidized, whether due to the effect of light, oxygen or changes in temperature.
The process known as Retrobight generally uses a hydrogen peroxide-based paste and exposure to light to reverse the process. The YouTuber explains that while the solution actually works at first, It causes more harm than good.
According to him, the bleach involved in the process causes the plastic of old consoles to become stained and develop some streaks. As a result, not only will they turn yellow again over time, but they are also likely to develop damage on their surfaces.
Therefore, Jueden states that many of the formulas that have become popular among the retrogamer community should be avoided. At least for those who intend to maintain their hardware in the long term, The best thing to do is periodic maintenance and cleaning and accept that they will actually take on a yellowish tone.
