TinyBox finally goes on sale, with AMD and Nvidia versions

TinyBox, the small AI accelerator box, finally went on sale this week. With prices starting at $15,000, the product comes in two versions: one with AMD GPUs and the other with Nvidia cards. For those who have been following TinyBox’s trajectory, this may come as a surprise.

TinyBox is a solution from Tiny Corp, founded by George Hotz. He was the one who posted that sales of his product had officially started, highlighting that they had 13 in stock (at the time of posting).

What’s notable is that in March Tiny Corp. even stated that it would no longer work with AMD GPUs in the TinyBox, due to difficulties it had been experiencing with its drivers. After all, the $15,000 variant comes with six Radeon RX 7900XTX installed. Not only that, but Hotz highlights that the red option is “the machine learning box with the best performance/$ ratio in the world.”

Still, the company itself acknowledges that the quality of drivers for the AMD TinyBox is only “acceptable,” and is willing to work with customers to get the best out of the box. The Nvidia TinyBox, on the other hand, comes with six RTX 4090 cards and costs much more: US$25,000.

TinyBox aims to be an affordable option in AI

While the box prices may seem prohibitive, they can be considered competitive in the segment if the performance doesn’t disappoint. An AMD MI300X, for example, costs between $10,000 and $15,000, while an Nvidia H100 can reach $40,000.

Along with the GPUs, the other components are identical between the versions. This includes a 32-core AMD Epyc processor and 128GB of RAM. The operating system is based on the free Ubuntu.

Finally, it is worth remembering that Tiny Corp worked with Intel’s Arc GPUs while considering abandoning Radeon. At the moment, it seems that we will no longer have a “blue” variant of the TinyBox.
