Threads, Meta’s social text network, announced this Monday (10/27) a feature for temporary posts, publications that are automatically archived after 24 hours.
According to the company, the objective is to allow users to share “unfiltered thoughts” and spontaneous opinions. In a statement, the company says that the idea is to reduce the “pressure” that exists on posts remaining on social media, encouraging more casual posts.
The motivation follows the concept of functions such as Stories, on Instagram — which refers to Snapchat’s original format —, which became the focus of momentary posts, while the feed started to be used for more elaborate content.
How do temporary posts work?

Activating the new feature is simple. To create a temporary post, the user just needs to select the “ghost icon” on the post creation screen, before publishing. Once activated, everything written will disappear from the feed 24 hours later.
What really sets the function apart is privacy. Unlike a regular post, replies sent to a temporary post do not appear publicly on the platform, but are forwarded directly to the user’s message inbox.
On the other hand, the function limits interactions to the author of the post, preventing other threads from being created, something common in social networks based on the old Twitter.
Likewise, likes and the list of those who responded are also private, and only the post author can see these interactions.
Threads bets on text tools

The launch of temporary posts is yet another of several tools that Threads has recently implemented to strengthen the platform as a conversation space.
The company highlighted in the statement the launch, recently, of text attachments, allowing much longer publications, of up to 10,000 characters, aimed at those who want to share more elaborate thoughts or excerpts from articles without relying on external links.
In addition, the platform also introduced, in the middle of the year, the ability to hide media or excerpts of text in publications that contain spoilers.
Meta says it will continue to update Threads to “make it easier and more fun to share your thoughts and connect with others.”
