Meta recently announced a very interesting update for Threads users who share posts on the fediverse. In March, the company began allowing users to choose to share their posts from its app on Mastodon and other services based on the ActivityPub protocol.
However, this initial integration came with some limitations, such as the fact that Threads users could not see responses from other applications like Mastodon without having to go directly to them. Now that has changed.

The new Threads update still has limitations
Meta has just revealed that the Threads app will now be able to display replies and likes coming from Mastodon and other similar services. This change marks the first time that Threads users, who have chosen to share on the fediverse, will be able to see content that was created on the fediverse as a whole directly from the Meta application, without having to switch between them.
This update promises to facilitate interaction between different decentralized platforms, making the user experience more integrated and cohesive.
But it is important to note that it is still in the testing phase, and although the update brings significant improvements, there are still some limitations. For example, Meta reported that Threads users will indeed be able to see these responses that came from other services like Mastodon, but they will not be able to respond to them directly from Threads yet.
Additionally, “some responses may not be visible,” meaning Threads notifications still won’t be completely reliable in tracking engagement. These limitations highlight the complexity of fully integrating decentralized and centralized services, but also show Meta’s commitment to continuing to improve this functionality.
Global expansion coming soon
In other positive news, Instagram announced the expansion of fediverse sharing options to more users, with the functionality now live in over 100 countries. Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, said the company expects to enable the fediverse beta features everywhere “soon.”
The changes are a crucial step for anyone interested in the future of decentralized social media. While Meta has been a little slow to deliver on its promises of ActivityPub support in Threads, the current update demonstrates significant progress.
With the potential to bring tens of millions of people into the fediverse, Threads can play a fundamental role in popularizing and strengthening decentralized social networks.
