A recent update to the Steam Deck kernel revealed information that has not yet been officially released about a mysterious Fremont project at Valve. Developers and enthusiasts found in the software’s lines of code mentions of a new device that reminded people of the late Steam Machines.
The information makes reference to a device codenamed Fremont, which uses an HDMI output to connect to a display. As the lines were found in a Steam Deck update, there was immediate speculation about a dock for the portable, once again following the design of the Nintendo Switch.
However, details about how the connection works may indicate that Valve is talking about an independent device. Brad Lynch explains that the information indicates that the full-size HDMI port on the mysterious Fremont connects directly to the GPU, not via USB. In other words, the GPU would be on the device itself with the HDMI output.
Therefore, the leak could indicate a mini PC or something with Steam OS to play directly on the TV. In other words, something close to what Steam Machines were in 2013, which never came close to the same success as the Steam Deck.
Steam Fremont are still in the early stages of rumors
It’s too early to make any bets on a new product based solely on a kernel update leak. However, it would not be unreasonable to imagine a new attempt by Valve in the console-style PC segment.
Since the first attempt with Steam Machines, the company’s operating system has evolved a lot. Not only that, but especially the hardware for building portable systems has advanced rapidly, and the mini PC segment has become quite popular.

Furthermore, the Steam Controller that has already appeared in leaks could be part of the company’s plans for this mysterious new device, not just for the Deck.
With SteamOS set to appear on more third-party devices, Valve may also be prepared to risk expanding its own portfolio. We’ll have to wait and see what the company plans with its Fremont project.
