What are exclusive games?
To begin the discussion, it is important to keep in mind exactly what exclusive games are, although the name itself is explanatory. In general, they are games developed and released exclusively for a specific platform, as in the case of consoles.
As a result, games can only be purchased and played on the platform for which they were developed. Practically all platforms have games of this type, such as the Switch, PlayStation, Xbox and even games that are released exclusively for computers.
Advantages of exclusive games
One of the most notable advantages of exclusive games is something that only really benefits companies, as they can guarantee a sales boost. If a game is well received and has good reviews, more people are interested in playing it, so when choosing a console to buy, this ends up affecting the choice. For example, when The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was released for the Nintendo Switch, there was a considerable increase in sales of the console.
Another advantage is that games that are made for a specific platform can generally take better advantage of the specific capabilities of that hardware, without having to compromise anything to make it run on other, less powerful devices. Usually when this happens, some adjustments need to be made.
This also ends up optimizing the game, as developers can really polish the game for that particular system. That’s why some games that are released for multiple platforms may have some problems on the computer while they run smoother on consoles. Of course, this is reversible if there was a good testing and optimization team, but when it is exclusive the risk is greater.
Finally, with exclusive games companies tend to “try harder”. If an exclusive game is very good, this generates more hardware sales, so this competition for the best exclusives ends up generating games that are often excellent.
Disadvantages of exclusive games
Now talking about the disadvantages, to begin with we have the main one, which is a limitation in the availability of games. When they are restricted to just one platform, players who don’t have that particular console don’t have the chance to enjoy the game, especially since hardly anyone will have all the consoles available.
Furthermore, it also helps to fragment the community, which is not a good thing. And I’m not even talking about the “console war” that’s going on, but simply the fact that players often can’t play with friends simply because they’re on different platforms.
And finally, stepping on companies’ toes, exclusivity directly brings a disadvantage to consumers, which is the lack of competition in terms of sales. If that particular game is only found on one platform, it is unlikely to go on sale or become cheaper, as happens with games that are offered in several stores. Not that it doesn’t happen, but not as often as others.
So, are you for or against?
After considering these points, after all, is it good to have exclusives or not? Leave your opinion in the comments and we want to know! And remember that the idea is to have a conversation so let’s respect everyone’s opinion!
