Taiwan’s press reports advances in a law that should prevent TSMC from producing its most advanced chips abroad. The information appears according to the Taiwanese giant of semiconductors increasingly invests in global installations, especially in the US.
At the end of last year Taiwan’s economic business minister, JW Kuo stressed that the country’s rules already prevented TSMC from producing by 2nm – its most advanced process today – outside the country. However, it seems that the rules were flexible, and the company got a permission to bring technology to the US.

Now the national authorities want to put on paper a definitive ban on practice. Apparently the norm is part of Article 22 of a new ordinance for industrial creations, which is being processed in the Taiwanese government. In addition to other determinations, the law establishes the “N-1 policy (n less one)”, which orders TSMC facilities outside Taiwan to always be a generation behind in its technologies.
Another important aspect of the regulation is that Taiwan officials will be able to block any company in the country to do business with foreigners if the government determines that they have risks to national security.
TSMC must face a new law in his homeland later this year
According to the country’s reports, the law is expected to advance and take effect later this year in recent months. This does not necessarily mean that TSMC needs to change its current expansion plans outside the country.

The chip manufacturer will only need to ensure in your roadmap that production of a particular process in the US starts only after working with something more advanced in Taiwan. When your 1.4nm lithography starts in your country, for example, the company could start doing 2NM chips in the US.
