Launched on June 5, the Nintendo Switch 2 maintained the manufacturer’s tradition of not betting on top of the line hardware as Sony and Microsoft do. However, a developer states that this should not be the largest limiter of the device, but some decisions linked to your software.
In an interview with Podcast Moore’s Law is Dead, Matthews Cassells, founder of Alderon Games, said he believed the new console brought some doubtful choices. According to him, one of the leading limiters of the device is that he still uses FAT32 and Exfat file formats.
Besides this means that Nintendo needs to pay a license for Microsoft to use the format, It also limits files to a maximum size of 4 GB. This requires developers to deal with smaller files and more compaction, which may limit texture details and loading times.
According to Cassels, the choice made for Switch 2 generates curiosities because there are already some more modern alternatives on the market. It cites as an example the PlayStation 5, which uses a Linux -based format that has no licensing cost or remarkable limitation.
Switch 2 storage also limits developers
The founder of Alderon Games also pointed out as a limitation the fact that Nintendo restricts how many times a game can write data on Switch 2 Nand storage. According to him, the decision is made to ensure the longevity of the component, minimizing wear over time.

The developer explains that this is the result of the fact that the manufacturer has decided to save money on its components without any apparent benefit. For him, higher quality memories would not imply much higher production costs, and would benefit both the public and creators.
To top it off, Cassells criticized how much GameChat and the operating system consume RAM and the way Nintendo uses heavy encryption solutions to protect itself to count piracy. He also stated that feels a lot because Switch 2 development kits are quite limitedwhat has made it difficult to work on many studios interested in exploring it.

Despite these issues, Alderon Games is still willing to bet on the platform, where it is already possible to play its game Path of Titans. The console hit stores recording new hardware sales records, but did not bring such positive news to Third Party studios that they decided to support it.
