Supposed art to promote the RTX 5090D is circulating on social media. The image originated from a post by MEGAsizeGPU, a well-known “leaker” with a good history of hits. The RTX 5090D should be the top-of-the-line model variant of the RTX 50 made especially for China.

The art itself does not provide any information about the video card. We can only see the name of the card, in the traditional NVIDIA font, with the “D” appearing a little reduced next to it, as if it were a boost. However, the most important thing about this leak is what an RTX 5090D logo appearing now could represent.

As mentioned, the “D” model card is made for China, and made its debut with the RTX 4090D. This is a “nerfed” version of the card to comply with US sanctions against the Asian country and, thus, allow the GPU to be sold there legally.

NVIDIA following the same path for its new generation of cards with an RTX 5090D would not be a surprise, but the timing is. The RTX 4090D was launched a year after the original version of the card, while the RTX 5090D logo appearing now could be an indication of the product arriving in the same window as other Blackwells.

What restrictions will we see on an RTX 5090D?

As mentioned in the comment of one of the responses to the MEGAsizeGPU post, the RTX 4090D is already very close to the limit allowed to sell a card in China. Therefore, it is curious to imagine what advances NVIDIA could promise for the RTX 5090D without violating US export rules to the country. Even more so with the immense difference that the RTX 5090 seems to have in relation to the 5080.

The folks at Tom’s Hardware comment that the RTX 4090D is approximately 10% weaker than the RTX 4090. Using the same calculation for the new generation, based on rumors, the RTX 5090D would have more or less 19,200 CUDA cores, which is still almost 80% more than the 10,752 cores offered by the RTX 5080.

Therefore, it is unlikely that NVIDIA will follow the same “cut” ratio in performance for the RTX 5090D. If the card actually arrives in the same window as the others, there is little left to know what the manufacturer’s solution will be.
