O The Captaindeveloped by AMD in partnership with the US Department of Energy and the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, it was officially recognized as the most powerful supercomputer in the world in 2024. Another achievement that is in line with AMD’s intentions to strengthen itself in strategic partnerships for the data centers.
In terms of computational power, the machine registers 1.74 exaFLOPS, according to the Top 500 which lists the most powerful supercomputers in the world. El Capitan appears ahead of Frontier, which was the most powerful supercomputer in the world, with 1.3 exaFLOPs.
El Capitan in the lead
At maximum capacity, El Capitan could reach 2,7 exaFLOPsregistered no field “Rpeak” of the ranking. Check out the 5 most powerful supercomputers in the world below. Notice the number of colors that each of these machines contains.
Cutting-edge architecture and technology
Equipped with an APU, the hybrid between EYPC 4th generation CPU technology with GPU capability based on CDN3 architecture, resulting in the Instinc MI300A product. With this bet on hybrid technology, it is possible to increase energy efficiency, crucial to meeting massive computational demands without compromising sustainability.
Purpose and applications
Developed to simulate nuclear scenarios in a more realistic and safe way, El Capitan improves the ability to predict the behavior of materials under extreme conditions. Additionally, it plays a key role in modeling complex physical phenomena and advancing artificial intelligence, supporting research in areas such as national security and climate change.
“We are excited to see El Capitan become the second AMD-powered supercomputer to break the exaflop barrier and become the fastest supercomputer in the world. Featuring the incredible performance and efficiency of AMD Instinct MI300 APUs, this groundbreaking machine is a testament to the dedicated work between AMD, LLNL and HPE,” said Forrest Norrod, executive vice president and general manager, AMD in note. “At AMD, we are powering the future of computing with leading performance and capabilities that will continue to define the convergence of HPC and AI for years to come.”
AMD continues to stand out in the data center market
AMD continues to direct its efforts towards the data center market, a segment that is helping the company achieve very optimistic numbers in each new review of its financial statement.
In the third quarter, AMD recorded a total revenue of US$6.819 billion, number that is distributed among all segments in which the company operates. This value represents a jump in 18% compared to the same period last year. Of this amount, products related to data centers were responsible for US$3.549 billion in revenue. Obviously, they were also responsible for the largest share of profit the company obtained. US$ 1.041 billion.
