STF demands R$10 million to unblock social network

The controversy intensified after X requested the immediate unblocking of its operations in the country. The company argued that it had complied with the minister’s previous determinationsincluding the appointment of a legal representative on Brazilian soil and the blocking of specific profiles that were the target of investigations.

However, Moraes was not completely satisfied with the platform’s actions. In addition to the million-dollar fine, the minister demanded clarification on the use of R$18.3 million that had previously been blocked for the payment of sanctions. The judge also questioned whether the company intends to give up appeals related to this amount.

Another controversial point in the decision was the imposition of a fine of R$300,000 to lawyer Rachel de Oliveiralegal representative of the company in Brazil. This unusual measure demonstrates the rigidity with which the STF is treating the case.

Defense of X tries to release the platform with the STF

It is important to highlight that this is not the first time that the platform has faced legal action in Brazil. Previously, the transfer of R$ 18.3 million to the Union’s coffers had already been determined. However, Moraes clarified that this transfer does not represent the “final and definitive payment” of the fines, due to a pending appeal from Starlink, another company owned by Elon Musk, owner of X.

Despite the new requirements, the minister recognized that the platform has already met some important requirements. Among them, the blocking of nine profiles stands out, including that of senator Marcos do Val, and the appointment of Rachel Vila Nova Conceição as legal representative in the country.

X’s defense has argued that it offered “full compliance” with Moraes’ previous determinations. The platform’s lawyers requested authorization to restore services and issue a letter to ANATEL to end the blocking measures.

This case continues to develop, with the expectation of new moves by both the company and the Judiciary in the coming days. The situation raises important debates about freedom of expression, regulation of social networks and the jurisdiction of the STF on issues involving international digital platforms.
