SteamOS is the operating system used by the Steam Deck, but Valve has indicated that the software will not remain exclusive to its platform for long. The latest beta version available reveals that there are plans to also make it available to the ROG Ally portables and perhaps others in the near future.

One of the lines described in the update is very specific and brings hope to users who do not want to continue playing via Windows 11 as they currently do: “added support for extra ROG Ally buttons”. This is a very strong indicator that they intend to make their system available to other gaming devices.

Valve hasn’t said when a version of SteamOS will be available on ASUS’ ROG Ally or other laptops, but if there’s any information about it on the system, it at least indicates that they’re testing the available options and considering a release soon.

One of the positive points is that Valve’s operating system is aimed at gaming devices – with improvements specifically for these and also focusing on bringing a more specific experience than what we have on others.

This could also indicate how quickly the company has changed its stance on its Steam Deck and SteamOS. Expanding its reach could help manufacturers work with them, bringing even more consumers to its platform – even those who don’t want to buy its hardware.

ASUS has just launched the ROG Ally X, which could mean that Valve has decided to release SteamOS to go with it and allow consumers who opt for the new handheld to download and play games on its platform regardless of the device they decide to purchase. More details should be released soon.
