Valve’s gaming operating system, SteamOS, can begin to be used on devices from the company’s partners. Thus, the platform would not be limited to the Steam Deck or just products from Gabe Newell’s company. This is what the announcement of a new badge in the Steam brand guide indicates.

The company recently published an updated brand guide, which teaches its partners and customers how to use its brands and logos appropriately. The guide reveals a new “Powered by SteamOS” badge. The description of this new image says, in free translation:

“The Powered by SteamOS logo indicates that a hardware device will run SteamOS and will enter the system when turned on. Partners and manufacturers will ship hardware with a Steam image as offered and/or developed in close collaboration with Valve.”

In other words, the company intends to work closely with its partners and customers to create devices licensed to use its operating system. The premise follows the official statement issued by Valve in August, when the company said that its system would not yet be supported by third-party devices, but that they were working to change that.

SteamOS can help offer more affordable devices

From a consumer perspective, one of the main advantages of SteamOS appearing in more products is possibly making their prices more affordable. The format of portable gaming PCs has become very popular since the launch of the Steam Deck, but other companies need to turn to other operating systems for their products.

One of the most popular, obviously, is Windows, which has a high license cost to be able to use it. This cost is reversed to the customer, making the device slightly more expensive. Therefore, using Valve’s system can help reduce the value of products a little.

Not only portables, but nothing prevents mini PCs from also taking advantage of the system. Especially those made with a total focus on gaming, being able to take advantage of Valve’s software to have a system entirely focused on gaming, like a console. It even reminds us of the late Steam Machines.
