Officially announced last Wednesday (12), the new generation of the Steam Machine is quite different from the first incarnation of the idea, which debuted a decade ago. However, while Valve doesn’t plan to work on multiple versions of the concept, it already imagines a future in which other manufacturers offer desktops based on SteamOS.
In the original version of Steam Machines, they were made up of hardware from different manufacturers, which had the common element of using a Windows-based operating system. The concept presented this week is more closed: in addition to providing the software, Valve also controls its hardware specifications.
“We believe the original version was a cool product. Obviously they didn’t work out very well,” engineer Yazan Aldehayyat explained to PC Gamer. “But in many ways, we feel now is the right time to build this device.”, he added.
New Steam Machine wants to offer convenience to the public
Aldehayyat explained that a large part of the concept of the new Steam Machine is result of the positive experience Valve had with the Steam Deck. The laptop caught the public’s attention for offering a convenient way to access PC games, while also providing space for some customized configurations.
In common with the portable hardware, the new compact PC will feature the SteamOS operating system and the Proton compatibility layer, which guarantees access to games developed for Windows. While Valve only announced one piece of hardware, it believes its format will serve as a basis to inspire many other manufacturers.
“We’re excited to see what third parties do as they bring SteamOS to other form factors and iterations.“, explained Aldehayyat. However, the company makes it clear that the work of other companies can be hampered by issues such as drivers — the new Steam Machine uses a proprietary solution on which the company worked in partnership with AMD.
The main advantage of the new device in relation to the Steam Deck is that, as Valve itself highlighted, it is a PC. Like this, it may be up to the public themselves to decide how to assemble their own version of the device and make the Linux-based operating system really start to threaten the dominance that Windows still maintains in the gaming segment.
