During the official announcement of the Ryzen Z2 line, AMD stated that Valve was one of its partnerships that was developing products based on the technology. While this gave rise to the impression that a Steam Deck 2 was in the works, the owner of the device came forward to clarify that this is not the case.

In a message published on BlueSky, developer Pierre-Loup Griffais, who is dedicated exclusively to the laptop, denied that a successor is already being worked on. “There is not and will not be a Steam Deck Z2. I assume the slide was intended to say that the new series was created for products like this, not to advertise anything specific”.

Previously, Valve had already stated that it did not intend to make very frequent updates to portable hardware. The company’s intention has always been to wait for considerable leaps in performance and energy consumption before thinking about the possibility of creating a new generation of its device.

Steam Deck 2 is still a while away

Although Pierre-Loup Griffais’ statement is a real blow to the expectations of those who were hoping for a Steam Deck 2, There’s still reason to be excited about AMD’s new generation of APUs. It promises to bring very relevant leaps in performance, which will provide the basis for a new generation of portable devices.

Interestingly, the only device already confirmed in this sense is the Lenovo Legion Go S, which will be exclusive to the Ryzen Z2 GO model — precisely the most discreet in the line. AMD states that it is already working on partnerships with companies like ASUS to develop new devices, the announcements of which should not be long in coming.

As far as the Steam Deck goes, Valve should continue to improve the handheld with software updates and new features. While the power of the hardware is not expected to change in the coming years, the company should continue to review internal components to ensure lower manufacturing costs and improvements in issues such as battery life.
