While competitors like ASUS and Ayaneo are constantly renewing their hardware, the Steam Deck has been essentially the same since it made its debut. According to Valve, the decision not to rely on annual updates for its portable PC It has to do with the desire to respect your consumers.
In an interview with Reviews.org, designers Lawrence Yang and Yazan Aldehayyat explained that they see no reason for the hardware to receive annual updates. “And honestly, from our perspective, it’s not really fair to consumers to come up with something so early that it’s only gradually better.”.
They also reinforced something they have said on several previous occasions: the Steam Deck will have upgrades, but only when they are really relevant. “We really want to wait for a generational leap in computing without sacrificing battery life before we release a second generation”.
Steam Deck has already received an OLED model
Although the basic hardware of the Steam Deck has remained the same since the device debuted in 2022, some modifications have already been made to it. Over the years, Valve began working with new suppliers and made internal adjustments that ensured the best cooling of the latest units.
Furthermore, in 2023 it brought an OLED model to stores, which stands out for its higher quality panel and for consuming a slightly smaller amount of battery. The company has also made several adjustments to the portable PC’s software, allowing it to bring new functions and optimizations to consumers.
According to Aldehayyat, the Steam Deck only exists because Valve believed that the point had reached where portable GPUs offered performance good enough to run most Steam games. “We would love to see this performance-per-watt trend progress quickly to do this [uma segunda geração]But we’re not there yet”.
