Brazilian Starlink fans have reason to celebrate: the average connection speed increased from 90 Mb/s to 140 Mb/s in the last year, an increase of 55%. The numbers were obtained by Technoblog with people with knowledge of the subject.
The satellite broadband company has invested in the Brazilian market. So much so that it has become common to see Starlink advertisements here, in addition to various promotions on both the equipment and the subscription. The standard kit currently costs R$1,680, while the connection itself costs R$235 per month.
The result came. Since 2023, Elon Musk’s provider has recorded rapid growth, positioning itself as the largest satellite access company in the country. There are 443 thousand subscribers, according to the most recent data from Anatel. The states with the most Starlink consumers are Minas Gerais, Pará, São Paulo, Amazonas and Mato Grosso.
The average upload is 18 Mb/s and latency is usually between 25 and 30 ms, as far as I was able to determine.
Around the world, the evolution in the quality of Starlink’s service has been even greater: the average speed has jumped from 145 Mb/s to 220 Mb/s since the beginning of the year. Vice President of Engineering Michael Nicolls said in a post on X that the gains come from a “combination of software improvements and increased orbital capacity.”
There are more than 6 thousand satellites positioned around the globe. The idea is to start launching the next generation of equipment, called V3, from 2026. The goal is to reach an average download of 1 Gb/s.
