Huawei prepares Harmonyos to compete with Windows in the computer industry. After consolidating the operating system on smartphones, tablets, TVs and wearables, the company announced the arrival of PCs during an event promoted in May. This new phase is a company’s important step to expand the brand’s ecosystem and reduce dependence on foreign software.

With the end of Huawei’s license with Microsoft in March 2025 and the impossibility of renewal due to United States sanctions, the company accelerated the development of the PC version of Harmonyos.

In this way, Huawei has completely restructured the new system based on its own architecture, abandoning any dependence on Android. In addition, the company has already presented a prototype notebook running this version, and the official release should occur later this month.

Huawei structure HarmonyOS in solid bases

Huawei has structured Harmony for PCs based on three pillars: base, ecosystem and experience. The first comprises the owner kernel, the Ark Engine graphic engine, the StarsHield safety architecture and development tools such as Arkts, Arkui and Deveco.

Meanwhile, the second supports over 150 native applications and integration with over 2,000 Harmony ecosystem apps. The third ensures compatibility with more than 1,000 external devices, including printers, scanners, mice and other peripherals.

The system also features Harmonyos Storage Folder, a new file manager that organizes documents automatically. The Ark Engine graphics engine reinforces the visual experience with soft animations even with multiple windows open. Similarly, it allows dynamic wallpapers and nature -based themes.

According to Huawei, Harmony’s fluidity and response time exceed those of Windows, although independent analyzes are not yet available. The company states that it has developed this new stage over five years, supported by more than 20 global institutes, and has registered more than 2,700 patents.

Huawei will initially launch the system only in China, focusing on its own notebooks, such as the Matebook line. In the long run, the company intends to use Harmonyos as a unified platform between devices, mirroring Apple’s strategy with macos, iPados and iOS. Finally, the company plans to expand the system gradually to other markets, especially in Asia.
