In a recent interview with the Japanese portal and magazine FamitsuHideaki Nishino, Senior Vice President of Platform Experience at PlayStationaddressed a series of topics involving the future of consoles Sony. Among the topics, Nishino commented on the longevity of the PS4, the vision for the PS5 and gave clues about the long-awaited PS6.
With 11 years on the market, the PlayStation 4 remains relevant, receiving the majority of launches even after the arrival of the PS5. For Nishino, this transition between generations will be replicated in the future, ensuring that the PS5 will remain active even with the arrival of its successor.
“We believe that the PS5 will have a similar longevity to the PS4. However, saying that the cycle will be long does not mean that we should delay the launch of a new product with innovative technologies”Nishino explained.
The gradual evolution strategy
The executive highlighted that the ideal time to launch new products is directly related to technological advancement and implementation capacity. According to him, Sony seeks to balance the launch of new consoles with continued support for previous generations, expanding options for players.
“The timing of introducing new hardware is related both to the advancement of technologies and the time needed for us to implement them. Therefore, I think it is important to offer new products while existing systems continue to be used, creating an overall expansion in the player experience”, he stated.
Nishino also commented on how the automated production of the PS5 was a differentiator compared to the PS4. He highlighted that this approach allows for greater quality and durability in hardware, making room for consoles to have longer life cycles.
“In the case of the PS5, it has been produced automatically from the beginning. The idea is to allow devices that can be used for longer to continue in use, while we introduce new technologies in a complementary way, expanding the possibilities”, explained.
Asked about the development of new consoles, Nishino confirmed that work on the PS5 Pro began in 2020. Despite this, he avoided giving details about the PS6, keeping the focus on aspects such as innovation, timing and accessibility.
“Products must be launched with a balance between technology, price and timing. We are always evaluating the right time to launch something that fits what we believe are the market needs.”
