Sony is shipping updated PS5 Slim and standard PS5 with a revised liquid metal thermal interface and heatsink layout based on the PS5 Pro. The change was highlighted by Polish modification and repair specialist Modyfikator, who opened new CFI-2116 units and found a different pattern around the APU.

Independent reports now confirm that the latest consoles use etched grooves to contain liquid metal and improve long-term reliability.

Since launch, the PS5 family has used liquid metal as thermal paste to keep AMD’s SoC in check. Although, Some early standard and Slim models, including the CFI-2016, reportedly had leaks around the chip.

Our problematic cases, Liquid metal could migrate when consoles were stored upright or moved frequently, leading to uneven contact, higher fan speeds, or, in extreme scenarios, overheating shutdowns.

In the PS5 Pro (R$5,468.31 at Kabum), Sony had already solved this problem with deeper grooves and a slightly changed application pattern that keeps the material contained around the chip.

Now, this same PS5 Pro approach is being implemented on cheaper models. The latest versions of the PS5 and PS5 Slim, identified as CFI-2100 or CFI-2200, and the 2025 Slim model, CFI-2116 B01Yutilize the PS5 Pro’s liquid metal layout, with etched grooves around the APU’s contact area.

SoC, chassis and fan design remain the same. However, the heatsink base and thermal paste application have been redesigned to reduce the risk of leaks and maintain more consistent temperatures over years of use.

There is also a small convenience improvement in some CFI-2116 packages. Certain new Slim drives ship with a pre-paired disk drive that does not require an online activation step.

This eliminates one of the most controversial configuration requirements of the unit’s modular design. Unfortunately, These bundles appear to only be available in select stores for now.

For current PS5 owners who are not experiencing overheating or abnormal fan noise, There is no need to worry and take the console for technical assistance.

And anyone concerned about long-term use or placing the console upright should Leave any liquid metal service to specialized technical assistance.

At Kabum, the PS5 costs R$3,440.07 and the PS5 Slim costs R$3,609.05, however, these editions probably do not yet have the change. When purchasing, it is important to check whether the PS5 models are CFI-2100 or CFI-2200 or CFI-2116 B01Y for the 2025 Slim models.
