Motivated by the success of the Nintendo Switch, the portable PC segment and the PS Portal, Sony is preparing a definitive return to the world of portables. According to Bloomberg, the company is already preparing a new device that will be able to run PS5 games natively.
While confirming the project, the sources consulted by the vehicle state that the new product should still take a few years to reach stores. The Japanese company’s intention is both to compete with the Switch’s successor and with a new portable that Microsoft would be developing internally.
Bloomberg also claims that the roots of Sony’s new laptop can be found in the PS Portal. She states that the manufacturer’s original intention was to bring to stores a product capable of running games natively, not an option that works exclusively with streaming content.
Sony already has a history in notebooks
Although it doesn’t reveal many details about the new device, the Bloomberg report states that the new hardware will be capable of running games natively. So, while it should still bring advanced connectivity features, its focus will not be on streaming games running on other devices.
With the new venture, Sony intends to explore a growing segment and reach new audiences who may not want to invest in a traditional console. In its favor, the company has the fact that it has already invested in some notebooks, although it has had mixed results in its experiments.
While the PSP was a sales success, but suffered greatly from software piracy, the PS Vita is considered an opportunity that never yielded the expected results. Quite powerful for its time and featuring an OLED screen, the laptop didn’t take off thanks to the expensive price of its memory cards and a first party support that was quite timid.
