Even though the Nintendo Switch is getting closer, the PlayStation 2 maintains its position as the best-selling console of all time. THE Sony reaffirmed recently that the PS2 holds the brand of 160 million units sold since its launchin March 2000.
This isn’t the first time we’ve heard about this number. In a farewell edition of PlayStation Podcastearlier this year, the brand’s former president, Jim Ryan, casually mentioned the PS2’s total of 160 million sales. Now, however, Sony has made the brand official by updating its PlayStation history pagementioning this sales number.
In September the console was also registered as Japan Future Technology Heritage, award whose mission is to highlight prominent scientific and technological innovations emerging from the country.
Continuous growth, even years after the end of production
The last major milestone announced by Sony regarding the PS2 was in 2011, when the console surpassed 150 million units sold. In just one year, that number jumped to 155 million. Since then, sales have slowed, which is only natural considering that production of the PS2 ended in January 2013. However, the console still managed to add another 5 million units to its total in subsequent years, a remarkable feat for a device which is no longer manufactured.
Comparison with other PS editions
The PS2 remains at the top when compared to other consoles from Sony and the industry in general. See how he positions himself in relation to sales:
- PS5: 65 million units;
- PS4: 117 million units;
- PS3: 87 million units;
- PS1: 102 million units.
Among competitors, the Nintendo DS came close, with 154 million units sold. The Nintendo Switch, currently with 146 million, still has the potential to surpass the PS2. Will it happen?
