Sony announced on Monday (14) an increase in price charged by PlayStation 5 (PS5) in the United Kingdom, Europe and New Zealand. According to the company, The readjustments range from 10% to 15%, and are the result of a “challenging economic environment”. Although the company does not directly mention them, the rates announced by Donald Trump seem to be the main factor for change.
Taking into consideration the company’s decision, it should not take long until console prices increase in the United States – and other markets. Although the Trump government has announced that PCs are temporarily exempt from its tariffs against China, the same is not the case with consoles.
Since most PS5 production focuses on China, this means that the product is subject to the import rate of 145% for the goods originated in the country. Although Europe is not subject to the same values, Sony may have decided to increase prices on the continent as a way of not having to appeal to even more aggressive adjustments concentrated only in the United States.
Digital PS5 was the hardest hit
In its official blog, Sony explained that the exclusively digital version of the PS5 will be the hardest hit by the readjustments. At the same time, from Monday she also decided to increase the price that will be charged by the optional record reader that guarantees this console model the possibility of reading physical media.

In its announcement, the company also clarified that it already plans punctual adjustments in the amounts charged in the EMEA region (Europe, the Middle East and Africa), which can vary greatly. For him, this would be “the right time” for the company to increase PS5 prices, which should not be the only product in the category to go through readjustments. This remains a real possibility for the Nintendo Switch 2, whose pre-sales were suspended in the country shortly after Trump announced large rates against Vietnam, which concentrates the production of the device.
