SK Hynix to begin mass production of GDDR7 memories in 2025

SK Hynix took GDDR7 memories to Computex 2024, but according to the manufacturer’s representatives it will still take some time for mass production to begin. A spokesperson revealed to the AnandTech website that their manufacturing will only take place in the first quarter of 2025.

It is important to mention that both Samsung and Micron have already announced that their production will be seen in 2024, leaving the corporation behind in a competitive market that will feed the next gaming GPUs from NVIDIA and AMD.

SK Hynix’s GDDR7 memories were already discussed in March this year, before the GTC 2024 event. The company hopes to reach 40 Gbps speed with them at some point in the future, but its first generation should reach between 28 Gbps and 32 Gbps.

For gamers, this bandwidth can make a big difference – as it will allow the graphics card to transfer more data such as high-resolution textures between the chip and the graphics processor. Even if some GPUs maintain the memory bus we currently see, there will still be advantages with this addition.

GDDR7 memories in the hands of NVIDIA

It is debated that Samsung, Micron and SK Hynix are competing to be the main supplier of GDDR7 memories for NVIDIA – which intends to use them in its GeForce RTX 50 “Blackwell” graphics cards. However, if your plans really are to launch the first models at the end of 2024, then one of them is already out of the race.

Even though this may be changed in the near future, it is unlikely that NVIDIA will change its supply – unless there is a serious problem with its choice that would require a review in this aspect.

Still, not all NVIDIA GeForce RTX 50 “Blackwell” GPUs appear to use GDDR7 memories. A recent leak indicates that some versions of the new generation will maintain GDDR6, but nothing has been confirmed by any of the manufacturers involved in the project.
