Silicon Motion reveals SM2504XT controller for PCIE 5.0 SSDs at more affordable prices

Silicon Motion’s main highlight for this year’s computer is its new SM2504XT controller for 5.0 PCI -compatible SSDs. The product differs not by bringing technology to the limits of its performance, but on the contrary – it does not offer so much performance to enable the creation of more affordable drives.

Silicon Motion does not yet talk about prices or estimates of how much SSD can cost with its new controller, but the promise is to help make the current generation of the connection interface something “mainstream”. SSDS 5.0 looking for the maximum in performance usually has a prohibitive value, and the SM2504XT should bring options with popular values.

The manufacturer aims to show some SSDs equipped with its controller at the Taipei Technology Fair, but has already released some performance estimates. The SM2504XT helped drives reach sequential readings up to 11.5gb/s, with recording being 11gb/s. The random performances are 1.7m and 2m of IOPs, respectively.

According to Tom’s hardware, this is close performance than the first SSDs compatible with PCIE 5.0 were able to offer, which is already well above PIE 4.0.

Silicon Motion SM2504XT focuses on efficiency and low latency

Silicon Motion highlights some more features from its new generation mainstream SSDS controller. An important novelty is support for SCA (separate Command Architecture), which separates the “paths” of command and NAND memory and addressing, helping to reduce latency and improve drive efficiency.

Speaking of efficiency, the SM2504XT promises an operation for the drive up to 4.7W, with only 1.2mw of use when idle. According to the company, it is a 12% improvement in relation to the power consumption of its SM2508 controller, focused on high end drives.

Finally, it is worth mentioning that the new component is compatible with HMB (Host Memory Buffer), for DRAM solutions, which usually appear among cheaper SSDs.
