Seagate can break the 100TB capacity mark on a HDD in the next five years, according to BS Teh, the company’s COE. In an interview with CNBC, he spoke of his optimistic expectations for the company’s future drives.

The statement came in response to a question about the actual demand of a 100TB drive. The executive stated that this would be a “key facilitator for the industry to be able to deliver the storage capacity the market needs.” As always, he mentions the demand for more AI -driven memory mainly.

Exos Mozaic 3+ offers 36TB and currently occupies Seagate’s largest capacity drive position. That is, BS Teh is promising basically triple the storage of his most powerful HDD by 2030.

In addition to the growing needs for more capacity, the Seagate executive mentions that this HDD would also be a solution to AI’s energy requirements. With the hype of technology without signs of slowing down, the concern with the amount of energy spent in the area has appeared increasingly.

“With the product itself, we will create it to use less energy by Terabyte, or to have more density on the device itself, so that when you integrate the product to your data center, you need less space, less energy but everything, because you are using less drives to reach that capacity,” explains Coi.

Official Roadmap of Seagate does not yet talk about 100tb

Despite the excitement of Seagate COO to promote your company during the interview, we do not have the confirmation of the 100TB in the company’s official roadmap. Not only that, Seagate has already failed to deliver promises of capacity increase before.

Tom’s hardware recalls that in its 2017 Roadmap, the company spoke of offering 50tb HDDs by 2026, in the form of Exos Mozaic 5+. Now this forecast has been readjusted to 2028, with next year to Exos Mozaic 4+, 40TB.

The entire line uses HAMR technology to reach these large capacity numbers. If Seagate maintains the same solution, it is difficult to imagine such a large storage leap between the forecast of 2028 and 2030. It may be that the executive is too optimistic, or already knows some new generation of technology not yet disclosed by the company.
