The NVME Protocol through the PCIE interface became popular in SSDs, which offer technology in both professional and domestic drives. However, Seagate is one of the first companies to show concrete advances in their work to bring NVME to traditional HDDs.

Seagate is not the only one working on NVME HDDs through the PCI interface, but went ahead when demonstrating a complete system using the components. The company has equipped an eight NVME HDDS, four NVME SSDS for cache and one NVIDIA DPU Bluefield 3 DPU.

Today most HDDs uses SAS/SATA to communicate with systems, being limited to transfer rates between 6 and 12Gbps. PCIE NVME Protocol can exponentially increase these numbers – far beyond HDD would be able to enjoy, including.

But it is not just the gross speed the focus of the new solution. Seagate demonstrated on its test machine that direct access between GPU and Drive (Gpudirect), made possible by NVME, minimized latency in AI work. In addition, the NVME-over-Fabric (NVME-OF) enables continuous integration of various AI clusters, making it immensely facilitating staggering the capacity of servers.

Of course, Seagate’s plan with its new NVME HDDs is to offer a cheaper alternative to companies that need great storage capabilities, but without sacrificing enough AI performance.

According to information from Tom’s hardware, it would still be relatively “cheap” for Seagate to produce NVME compatible HDDs than SSDs, offering competitive prices for their customers.

However, we are still in the phase of conceptual machines and prototypes. It is difficult to make predictions when an NVME HDD finished will appear in the professional market. Probably other companies also offering their versions of technology will help heat the segment, so we should expect news from Seagate competitors.
