Samsung will invest in AI-focused GPUs

Samgung plans a large-scale investment in the development of GPUs, possibly focusing on improving its artificial intelligence processing infrastructure as an essential part of current hardware.

The decision was made during a meeting with investors, according to the Bloter report. The manufacturer’s main executives, including the board of directors, decided positively to continue with this investment as one of their main projects for the future of the corporation.

No specifications or further details have been released about the supposed GPUs that Samsung intends to bring to the market, but it is possible that their focus is just to boost AI processing in servers and data centers.

In other words, this does not mean that the manufacturer will, in fact, produce hardware with intellectual property like its other products. They may be debating the NVIDIA Omniverse “digital twin” system, referencing the investment in GPU processing power from this integration.

It was established that the development of GPU improvements at Samsung will be carried out at the Hwaseong HPC Center, in Gyeonggi Province (South Korea). Construction of this laboratory began in 2021 and was completed in April this year, being equipped with several large-scale servers and networking equipment for semiconductor design.

Samsung’s plans for its GPUs

The first time that investments in the GPU market were discussed by Samsung Electronics was in March 2023 – creating a management committee to study the market and possibilities.

This group consisted of JH Han (vice president and head of the DX division), TM Roh (president and head of the MX division), HG Park (president and head of the administrative support office) and JB Lee (president of the memory). They were all present at the investor meeting and signed the investment in GPUs now.
