Samsung this week presented its GDDR7 modules with 24Gb of capacity, the equivalent of 3GB. The manufacturer claims to be the first in the world to reach this density, with components that reach up to 42.5Gbps in performance. According to the company, the modules are already being tested for validation with the “largest” GPU manufacturers, and mass production is scheduled for the beginning of 2025.
Samsung’s new GDDR7 modules are manufactured using the company’s 5th generation process, with 10nm nodes. In this way, the company claims that it achieves up to 50% more density and up to 30% more efficiency compared to the previous generation. Hitting 42.5Gbps, the new memory delivers up to 80% more performance than GDDR6X, which is at 24Gbps.
Speaking of GDDR6X, this generation of modules appeared with 16Gb of capacity, a number that Samsung reached with GDDR7 in July. So, we could see video cards with much more memory in the next generation – at least the more expensive models that will take advantage of GDDR7. Tom’s Hardware has put together a breakdown of what we can expect in future GPU models:
- 128-bit: 12GB de VRAM a 680GB/s
- 192-bit: 18GB de VRAM a 1.020GB/s
- 256-bit: 24GB de VRAM a 1.360GB/s
- 320-bit: 30GB de VRAM a 1.700 GB/s
- 512-bit: 48GB de VRAM a 2.720 GB/s
Samsung’s GDDR7 employs technologies for more efficiency
The memory manufacturer highlights not only capacity in its new modules, but also their efficiency. As mentioned, Samsung promises improvements of up to 30% compared to the previous generation.
More about GDDR7:
This was achieved with technologies such as clock control management and dual VDD design. Furthermore, the new chips are advanced enough to turn off parts that are not in use, preventing energy “leaks”.
With speculation that the next generation Radeon will be on GDDR6, the expectation of seeing the difference that GDDR7 will bring is on the RTX 50.
