Samsung Electro-Mechanics (SEMCO) has announced a new partnership with AMD, becoming the new supplier of high-performance substrates for the manufacturer’s upcoming GPUs and processors for the server market.
According to the release, the collaboration between the two has as its main objective to overcome the unique challenges of integrating multiple semiconductor chips on a single large-sized substrate.
It’s worth mentioning that the high-performance substrate Samsung will supply to AMD is essential for upcoming CPUs and GPUs – bringing a larger surface area and higher layer counts, thus achieving dense interconnects to meet the demand of advanced servers.
Compared to standard substrates for home computers, those seen in servers are ten times larger and have three times more layers – ensuring greater energy efficiency without losing the integrity of signals between chips.

Samsung and AMD become partners
The partnership between Samsung Electro-Mechanics and AMD comes at a time when the South Korean company is investing heavily in this market. The corporation has injected 1.9 trillion KRW (South Korean currency) into its FCBGA factories – aiming to scale up substrate technology and manufacturing capabilities.
According to market information gathered by Prismark, semiconductor substrates will have an annual growth rate of 7% – today reaching 15.2 trillion KRW and reaching 20 trillion KRW by the year 2028.
Samsung is currently the market leader in embedded substrates, both for passive components (capacitors and inductors) and active components (integrated circuits).
