We have seen a battle for the top of the AI performance rankings across NPUs in mobile processor series. AMD has revealed details of the Ryzen AI 300 (Strix Point) and the evolution of this technology, ensuring less consumption with the XDNA 2 architecture and double the performance against Intel Lunar Lake and Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite.

The two Ryzen AI 300 SKUs revealed so far are equipped with the second generation of cores for applications that use artificial intelligence: XDNA 2. One of AMD’s focuses with the Ryzen 9000 for desktop and the new mobile series is higher performance per watt in all aspects.

In terms of NPUs, the new architecture features 32 AI engine tiles, 12 more than the largest first-generation XDNA implementation. This results in 5x more computing power with up to 2x greater efficiency.

In practice, this means that the Ryzen AI 300’s XDNA 2 NPU can deliver up to 50 TOPS of performance, 5x more than the first generation present in the Ryzen 7040 and 8040 mobile.

This level of performance is enough for about 2x the AI performance of the NPUs found in Intel Lunar Lake and Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite. In the case of the comparison with Lunar Lake CPUs, AMD used data already released by Intel, since they have not yet been released.

But, it is worth remembering that Qualcomm and Intel themselves have already announced that the NPUs of their new generations also deliver almost the same 50 TOPS as the new Ryzen mobile. We will have to wait for real tests when all these series are available on the market.

Furthermore, the final performance in applications involving artificial intelligence also includes the processing cores and graphics cores. Unlike other manufacturers, AMD did not reveal the final performance involving all these different technologies.

AMD Ryzen AI 300 mobile processors also feature more new technologies, such as the Zen 5 architecture, in addition to a refresh in the graphics architecture with RDNA 3.5 iGPUs, which promises significant performance gains, according to AMD’s own benchmarks.

The Ryzen AI 300 Strix Point arrives at the end of July along with the Ryzen 9000, which are also Zen 5-based processors, but for desktop.
