Intel revealed its new generation of processors for desktop PCs: the Core Ultra 200 “Arrow Lake-S”, with a focus on efficiency, but with a slight loss of performance in games. According to an Intel executive, Compared to the AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D, the new CPUs are 5% behind rivals with stacked cache.

Robert Hallock, vice president of technical marketing at Intel (and also ex-AMD), stated that this disadvantage is “very good”, since AMD’s CPU has a large amount of cache memory due to the technology used.

We show some data about the 7950X3D. Based on my understanding of performance, that part is within a few percent, so I think we’ll be about 5% behind X3D, which is very, very good considering we only have the cache built into the CPU and the excellent product IPC. So you will see a deficit of about 5%, I want to make that very clear.

At the presentation of the Core Ultra 200 CPUS, Intel compared the top-of-the-line SKU (Ultra 9 285K) with the Core i9-14900K, to show the generational evolution, in addition to the Ryzen 9 9950X and 7950X3D.

Regarding the processor with AMD’s top-of-the-line 3D V-Cache technology, in games, the high-end Arrow Lake-S was behind in Cyberpunk 2077 and Far Cry 6 by 21 and 13%, respectively, tied with Assassin’s Creed Mirage and Rainbow Six Siege, but had a 15% advantage over Civilization VI in Intel’s own tests.

Comparing the top of the line Intel Core Ultra 200 with the AMD Ryzen 9 9950X, its main competitor, in a battery involving 15 games, the Zen 5 CPU had an advantage between 4 and 13% in five of them, four did better with the Ultra 9 285K, and the rest entered the margin of a technical draw.

In professional applications, the Intel Core Ultra 9 285K outperforms the Ryzen 9 7950X3D by up to 30%, so the 5% difference appears to be in gaming, although this was not specifically mentioned.

It is worth remembering that the Intel Core Ultra 200 will not fight against the AMD Ryzen 7000X3D, as the current generation Ryzen 9000 will also receive different models with 3D V-Cache technology. There are already rumors pointing to a launch in early November, starting with the Ryzen 7 9800XD, following the Ryzen 7 x800X3D line, which are always excellent SKUs for games.

For now, we are waiting for the new Intel Core Ultra 200 processors to draw our conclusions against the Ryzen 9 7950X3D and other AMD CPUs, in addition to the Raptor Lake ones.
