Now that the review embargo for the RTX 5090 has been officially lifted, attention turns to the RTX 5080, which will arrive at a much more affordable price. Thus, we had one of the first performance test leaks for this model, with supposed results from an MSI RTX 5080 appearing on Geekbench.

The GPU is listed as MS-7E62, and appears in tests with Vulkan and OpenCL. The card was installed in a system that came with 32GB of DDR5-6000 memory and a Ryzen 7 9800X3D processor, currently considered the best for gaming. In other words, the build seems ready to not hinder the GPU’s performance with bottlenecks in other components.

Under these conditions, the supposed RTX 5080 scored 256,138 in OpenCL and scored 261,836 in Vulkan. The numbers show gains compared to the previous version of the card, the RTX 4080. We have a modest increase of 6.7% in OpenCL and a more robust difference of 22% in Vulkan.

In the median score, the RTX 5080 scored 9,063.77. This leaves the GPU 9.4% ahead of the RTX 4080 and another 8.2% ahead of the RTX 4080 Super. The card, however, does not surpass the RTX 4090.

RTX 5080 breaks a tradition of increased performance?

As TechPowerUp highlights, in recent generations NVIDIA GPUs have offered considerable performance increases that result in new xx80-class models outperforming their xx90-class predecessors.

The tests that leaked this week seem to indicate that this will not be the case for the RTX 5080, which apparently lags behind the 4090. However, it is important to remember that this is not an official test, and that driver updates can impact test results performance synthetics.

The information about the end of the RTX 5090 embargo on January 24th proved to be correct, so it is quite possible that we will finally have official reviews and tests for the RTX 5080 on the 30th.
