It seems that NVIDIA is finally preparing the process of discontinuing its top-of-the-line “Ada” family of GPUs. We are talking about the GeForce RTX 4090 e RTX 4090D. This could be a preparation for next-gen releases.

RTX 4090 was sovereign
The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 GPU was released almost two years ago (October 2022) and has held the GPU throne throughout its lifespan. There has been no competing card that has come close to challenging NVIDIA’s top-end gaming solution, and it looks like the reigning champion will end its run in a similar fashion.
Reports from Chinese card channels suggest that NVIDIA and its partners are planning to end production of the GeForce RTX 4090 and RTX 4090D GPUs starting next month.
While the plans have yet to be finalized, it is reported that October will mark the discontinuation of high-end graphics cards and several retailers can expect shortages as GPUs are still in high demand despite their high prices. In fact, the shortage could even lead to a price hike.
Shortages and high demand expected
It is also said that the discontinuation process will allow partner manufacturers to reduce their existing stocks of high-end GeForce RTX 40 GPUs and focus on next-gen launches, which are expected to take place in the coming months. The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 will replace the RTX 4090 globally, while the RTX 5090D will replace the RTX 4090D in Chinese markets.
Regarding the RTX 4090 and RTX 4090D discontinuation plan and market supply, please pay attention to the following important information taken from a Chinese website:
“There is no clear public information about the discontinuation plan for the RTX 4090 and RTX 4090D. NV is expected to officially discontinue the RTX 4090 and 4090D series in October and gradually digest the stock after November until the RTX 5090D is released to take over, and it may not even be completely connected. At the same time, the Chinese market only has the RTX 4090D model. If there is demand, it is recommended to prepare early to avoid stock shortages after November, which may lead to a possible increase in market prices.“
What to expect from the RTX 5090?
NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 4090 was actually the biggest performance boost across the entire RTX 40 lineup and is also seen as the best SKU, which was only slightly changed with the arrival of the “SUPER” series, which offered better value than its non-SUPER siblings.
Looking at the competition, it can be expected that the next-gen RTX 5090/5090D will not face any challenges from competitors like AMD e Intelas they are more focused on the mainstream and high-end segment and will not catch up to NVIDIA in the enthusiast segment until they establish a solid foothold in the mass gamer market.
The RTX 5090 is shaping up to be a real beast in its own right, with suggested TDPs around 600W and a very beefy design featuring the new GDDR7 memory. Expect more information on the RTX 50 “Blackwell” GPUs in the coming months.
