The Japanese company Rapidus has officially announced that it will start production of testing for chips in 2nm later this month, April. The “pilot” line, as the company calls, will result in the first wafers made in Japan in the process that is currently considered the most advanced in the world.
“Construction of the IM IM Manufacturing installation in Rapidus continued gently, and by the end of the fiscal year we will have completed the installation of semiconductor manufacturing equipment needed for the start of pilot operations,” said Atsuyoshi Koike, CEO of Rapidus. “With the approval of the Plan and Budget in the Nedo Project, we will start the pilot line in April, which will constantly refer to the planned mass production for 2027.”

The Innovative Integration for Manufacturing (IIM) installation mentioned by the executive was made in Chitose (Hokkaido) at the end of last year. This is where the company has incorporated the EUV and DUV machinery of ASML, necessary for the manufacture of 2NM chips.
The “race” for the new lithography is currently led by TSMC, which has established itself as the largest semiconductor manufacturer in the world. Rapidus’s “letter in the manga” to be more competitive in the process is that the company has planned its IIM to include the fully automated chip packaging process. At the moment none of the giants do advanced packaging in the same installation, so Rapidus can get ahead with a more streamlined production process if your plans work.

Rapidus project includes research and development
While wanting to start its 2nm test line this month, Rapidus also plans to start the installation of equipment at Rapidus Chplet Solutions (RCS).
RCS is a Center for Research and Development (R&D), located close to IIM. There will be produced product lines focused only on testing and creating new manufacturing techniques. The idea is to research package methods in three dimensions, interposition structures and so on.
