The minister Alexander de Moraesof the Federal Supreme Court (STF), determined this Friday (30) the suspension of the X (formerly Twitter) throughout Brazil. Before the suspension, users were already considering using a VPN (virtual private network) to access the microblogging social network.

A VPN allows you to browse the internet without your provider tracking your connection location. However, Moraes banned the use of VPN to access X and established a daily fine of R$50,000 for those who disobey.

According to the decision, there is a fine of R$50,000 for people or companies that use technologies such as VPN to access X, in addition to other possible civil and criminal sanctions.

In case you didn’t know, a VPN creates a secure connection between the user and the internet. With it, data is sent through an intermediary server, which may be in another country. This also allows access to geographically restricted content by hiding the user’s real location. VPN is commonly used to access another country’s catalog of a service. streamingsuch as Netflix.

Understand Moraes’ decision

The decision came after the Supreme Court demanded that Elon Musk, owner of X, appoint a new legal representative in Brazil, under penalty of suspension of the network. The summons was made by the Court’s official profile on X itself, with a deadline of 24 hours, which the company did not comply with.

On August 17, the X announced the closure of its office in Brazil after Moraes ordered the arrest of the platform’s representative if profile blocking orders were not followed. Failure to comply with the determinations led to increased fines by the STF.
