The hardware industry appears to be facing a historic event, according to new information from the Wall Street Journal. Sources for the site say that Qualcomm reportedly made a takeover offer to Intelsomething that is corroborated by recent information.
According to sources on the site, the offer would have happened days ago. This would be an opportunity that Qualcomm saw in light of Intel’s recent crises, which caused the company to even lose market value, reaching around 87 billion dollars in recent days.
But it is worth noting that people familiar with the situation make it clear that this does not mean that an agreement has been reached yet, as the situation is far from over.
Furthermore, as highlighted by the Wall Street Journal, in an acquisition of this magnitude, there is still the evaluation stage by antitrust agencies around the world and this takes time, as happened with Microsoft when trying to buy Activision Blizzard, a transaction that cost almost the value of Intel today.
According to the newspaper, to facilitate the acquisition, especially during the evaluation stage by the competent bodies, Qualcomm could sell some Intel assets to other buyers, diluting the hardware giant in this way.
Intel’s current situation is not good at all
Intel’s situation worsened after the crisis with the 13th and 14th generation Raptor Lake processors. Many of these processors had flaws in the manufacturing and chip optimization process, leading to a situation that put the hardware giant against the wall.
His delay in taking an official stance on the issue caused some damage. It got to the point where the company’s shareholders filed a lawsuit for hiding these problems. This snowballed, resulting in the departure of a key executive, something that caused the company’s shares to fall.
Intel has sold its stake in Arm and other companies to cover losses. In addition, the company has announced new cuts in areas considered “unnecessary”. There is even speculation that the company may have its shares removed from the US stock exchange.
All of this contributes to a drop in Intel’s value, causing other giants, in this case Qualcomm, to become interested in an acquisition.
