Last Friday, December 20th, Qualcomm went to trial on charges of violating its legal agreements for the use of Arm technologies. The jury decided that the Snapdragon X manufacturer was innocent, concluding that there was no violation when using Nuvia technologies in creating the new processors. The legal dispute, however, is not yet over.

Resuming the controversy, Nuvia had a contract to create processors for servers using Arm’s Armv8 technology. Qualcomm then bought Nuvia and used these cores – the Oryon – to create its Snapdragon X and Snapdragon 8 Elite processors.

Arm decided that this was a violation of the contracts it already had with Qualcomm for the use of its technologies, while the accused company argued that the practice was already covered by the agreements. And the US Court, in the end, agreed with the defense.

The jury, however, was unable to unanimously decide whether Nuvia violated its contract with Arm, which leaves room for discussions between the companies to continue and even a new trial. Furthermore, Arm can still appeal the decision in favor of Qualcomm.

Qualcomm celebrates jury decision

Arm’s lawsuit against Qualcomm completely threatened the company’s plans for the coming years, which intends to compete aggressively in the home PC market. Arm not only wanted compensation, but also for chips using its technology “improperly” (according to it) to be completely destroyed, including their development documents.

This threatened not only the Snapdragon X, but also the latest cell phone models, which also use Oryon cores.

“We are pleased with today’s decision,” Qualcomm stated in an official statement. “We will continue to develop world-class products that lead in performance and benefit users around the world with our incredible Arm-compatible Oryon CPUs.”
