Sparkle, one of Intel’s leading partners in the dedicated video signs segment, has shown in computer a GPU prototype that the company calls Project Thundermage. The name is a Battlemage Thunderbolt union, and the plate does just that, placing Thunderbolt 5 exits on an Intel Arc Battlemage.
The Thunderbolt 5 interface by USB-C connection does not appear much in video connections, but is not completely ignored either. It is not uncommon to see the dock format for external GPUs and portable displays, for example. Sparkle has decided that it could facilitate this kind of use with its new idea.

“Built with the Intel Barlow Ridge controller, Project Thundermage delivers data transfer at a hallucinating speed of up to 80GB/s,” explains Sparkle in the board showcase. “Enough for 8k@60 image while delivering simultaneously 9V/3A (27W) of power to turn on your screen.”

It is precisely in the mention of energy that the interface stands out. A plate in the molds of Project Thundermage could be great for a portable display, dispensing with the need to turn on the screen in the plug and using only the USB-C cable for image and energy.

Can Thundermage come true?
The demonstration of prototypes and product concepts in computex is not uncommon. Many of them do not come true or take years to appear on finished products. So it is hard to imagine if Sparkle would go forward with Project Thundermage.

If it happens, it would be interesting to see this kind of solution in GPUS smaller than it was shown at first. A larger focus on portability could take advantage of the potential to provide energy along with the image by the same cable.
The Thunderbolt 5 interface began to be used commercially last year, but we don’t see a wide range of technology products yet. This type of solution can help popularize its use.
