Of all the unusual places Doom has appeared running, a GPU certainly doesn’t seem the most unexpected. The “doomgpu” project, however, draws attention because it makes the game run only on the video card, almost completely eliminating the use of the processor.
The author of the work signs as jhuber6 on GitHub. He explains on the page that he made Doom run entirely on an AMD Radeon RX 6950 XT, installed on a Linux system with an LLVM C library for GPUs. And the result speaks for itself, in the video below:
We can see that the game runs perfectly well, but it is pushing the video card to its limits. The Radeon appears with 99% usage to run a game that is already 31 years old. But it is clear that the intention of the project is not for practical use or finding a better way to run Doom. In fact, jhuber6 revealed on GitHub the real reason for his project: “because I can”.
The author of “doomgpu” explains that his solution would work for NVIDIA cards too. On his system he uses Arch Linux with kernel 6.10.5, but any open source operating system distribution should work – as long as it is x86-based.
Running Doom goes beyond the meme
The idea of running Doom on practically anything must be one of the longest-running memes on the internet. From printers to the Apple Watch, the places where the game has already appeared running are impressive – even on a vape.
While many devs like to try new things just “because they can,” many of these projects are done as part of scientific research and development of new technologies. Doom is just the software chosen as a test due to the popularity of the meme.
