A processor with GDDR7 memory as “part of the CPU” could soon become a reality. This is what a leaked shipping document suggests, mentioning the chip and highlighting that the memory would be from Micron.
The description, however, does not say which manufacturer would be working on the component. The WCCFTech team raises the possibility that this could be a new APU from AMD, but this is just speculation.
However, it would be interesting if AMD were to prepare a processor with GDDR7 memory. In addition to the unexpected solution, it is also noteworthy that the manufacturer does not yet intend to use this technology in its dedicated GPUs, according to current rumors.
While Nvidia reportedly already has plans to implement GDDR7 in its Blackwell-based RTX 50 series, AMD has reportedly opted to reserve it for its next-generation GPU, the RDNA 5.
It is clear that at the moment we only have speculation based on a document with very limited information. The component may not even be aimed at the home audience, or it may be a highly customized processor for a specific device. In any case, a CPU with built-in GDDR7 memory has very interesting potential to follow.
Micron promises considerable improvements in GDDR7
It’s interesting that the rumors about this mysterious processor with next-generation memory appear on the same day that Micron released some very attractive information about GDDR7 performance.
According to the manufacturer, the technology can bring gains of up to 30% in game FPS, both in ray tracing and traditional rasterization. The company also promises 20% better performance in AI image generation.
But GDDR7:
The components reach up to 32Gb/s and may appear not only in RTX 50 desktop graphics cards, but also in notebook versions of these GPUs.
While Micron has taken the lead in producing these memories, SK Hynix is expected to begin mass production in 2025. So, at this early stage, it is most likely that the prices for GDDR7 will still be somewhat prohibitive.
