Content containing pornography ends up appearing in practically any type of place on the internet, and that is why it is up to programs and especially social networks to create rules and policies that prevent this type of posting. Or simply release it officially, as X is doing.
The platform has long been home to several active NSFW (not safe for work) communities. During this time, adult posts were not exactly allowed, but they were allowed, as the rules never explicitly addressed this type of content, neither to prohibit nor to allow. But now this situation has changed.

X revises its rules and allows pornography
With the constant evolution of the internet, social media platforms have become not only spaces for connection and sharing, but also settings where a wide range of content finds expression. It’s no surprise, then, that X (formerly Twitter) has played host to a variety of content, including pornography.
Recently, X revised its policies, formalizing permission for the posting of adult and graphic content on its platform. This change, while predictable to some, marks a new era in the social network’s approach to sensitive material. Users now have the ability to share consensually produced NSFW content as long as it is properly labeled. Furthermore, the new guidelines even cover videos and images generated by artificial intelligence.
This policy change is not random, considering that, under the leadership of Elon Musk, X had already explored the possibility of hosting adult content in its NSFW communities.
In accordance with X’s new “adult content” policies, the platform defends freedom of expression, recognizing sexuality as a legitimate form of artistic expression. However, there is a clear effort to balance this freedom with restrictive measures to protect younger users or those who choose not to be exposed to this type of content.
The policy states: “We believe in the autonomy of adults to engage and create content that reflects their own beliefs, desires and experiences, including those related to sexuality. We balance this freedom by restricting exposure to Adult Content to children or adult users who choose not to view it.”
New guidelines also for violent content
In addition to pornography content, the guidelines were also changed for posting violent content. Following a similar approach, they allow the posting of this type of content, but try to limit exposure to those that are excessively disturbing and prohibit content that is “excessively bloody or depicts sexual violence.”
The company justifies its decision to allow graphic content as a way to facilitate meaningful conversations about relevant topics, including through images and videos. However, security measures are implemented, such as marking posts as “sensitive media” and restricting viewing to users who are underage or who have not entered their age in their profile.
Although increase platform revenue.
Recent data indicates that approximately 13% of posts on the platform in 2021 contained adult content, suggesting an increase since then, especially with the growing presence of porn bots.
Care and growing observation on top of the X
Obviously, these new guidelines and newfound freedom will not be free from attention. Regulation of adult content and protection against child sexual abuse material will be paying close attention to these posts on X.
Especially because some previous incidents, such as fines in Australia and notices in India to remove child abuse content, show the need for continued vigilance and improvement of the platform’s security policies, especially in relation to such an important issue.
