PNY’s New PCIe 5.0 SSDs Offer Over 10,000MB/s for $99

PNY this week announced a new level for entry-level SSDs compatible with the PCIe 5.0 interface. The CS2150 series offers two capacity options and reaches read speeds greater than 10,000MB/s, starting at US$99 suggested price.

As per the rule for SSDs, the capacities also determine the performance of the products, which does not vary so much in each version of the PNY CS2150. Below, the specifications of each option linked to PCIe 5.0, with their prices:

• CS2150 with 1TB capacity: US$99 (R$600)
  Reading up to 10,200MB/s
  Recording up to 8,300MB/s
• CS2150 with 2TB capacity: US$179.99 (R$1,090)
  Reading up to 10,300MB/s
  Recording up to 8,600MB/s

Unfortunately, PNY hasn’t released technical details about its new Gen 5 SSDs, so we don’t know what controller they use. It would be interesting to know if it was this component that allowed the more affordable values, as it would enable more PCIe Gen 5 drives to appear in this range soon.

Evidently, performance just above 10GB/s is far from the maximum potential for Gen 5 SSDs, but PNY marks the launch of the first drive of this type with a price below the three-digit “barrier”.

As entry-level products, PNY’s new CS2150 series SSDs don’t come with many features. They do not have a differentiated or robust heatsink, nor do they feature several exclusive technologies. However, the drives are still compatible with standard technologies for products of this type, such as Microsoft’s DirectStorage.

The feature, which promises to improve game performance by reducing loading times on Windows, recently gained a testing tool on the 3DMark platform. Anyone who wants to test PNY drives or any other SSDs now has specific software for that.

The new CS2150 SSDs are now available on Amazon in the US, and we do not yet have a launch date in other markets where PNY operates.
