According to Famitsu’s weekly sales rankings, the number of PlayStation 5 units sold in Japan has fallen significantly. With just 11,817 units sold this week, the console sold less than half as much as the previous week.

Apparently, the price increase of the PlayStation 5 last week has impacted sales in the region. In the week before last, the PlayStation 5 sold 33,863 units in Japan. This week the number dropped to 11,817, basically a third of the previous week. Check out the numbers:

  • Week of September 2nd to 8th: 11,817
  • Week of August 26 to September 1: 33,863

Sony has adjusted the price of the PlayStation 5 in Japan to 79,980 yen (about R$3,045 in direct conversion). The change was implemented on the day September 2ndwhich probably led to changes in consumer behavior in the country.

It is important to note that if you follow Famitsu’s hardware sales ranking, you know that usually the PlayStation 5 sells in the range of 32 thousand to 45 thousand units per week. These are the numbers that have been repeated for months in Japan, with due fluctuations depending on the PlayStation 5 launches.

Will PlayStation 5 Pro impact console sales in Japan?

We will need to monitor the sales rankings in the coming weeks to see if the PlayStation 5 will actually sell less in Japan due to the price increase. Another factor is the PlayStation 5 Pro debutarriving on November 7th. There is a possibility that the price range (US$ 699) will continue to drive away consumers in the region, or because it is new hardware, many people will end up buying it.

PlayStation 5 sales were approaching those of the PlayStation 4 in the Asian country. If sales declines continue, it will take longer for the PS5 to catch up with the PS4. Similarly, Sony has increased the price of the DualSense in Europe and the United States.

As I follow Famitsu’s hardware sales rankings, it seems pretty clear that the price increase had a direct impact on sales. The timing of the PlayStation 5’s price increase coincides with the decline in sales in Japan. It remains to be seen whether this trend will continue in the coming weeks, or if the console will return to its usual weekly sales figures.
