Proving once again that the current generation of consoles is quite different from the others that got cheaper over time, Sony confirmed that will increase the price of PlayStation 5 in Japan. According to the company, the adjustment will come into effect on September 2nd of this year and is a consequence of “fluctuations in the global economy”.
Sony says the decision, which initially only affects the Japanese market, was also influenced by “a challenging external environment.” In addition to increasing the price charged for the console for the third time since it hit stores in 2020, the company will also change the prices of its official accessories.
The adjustment will be considerably high, reaching 13 thousand yen, or approximately R$496.97 in a direct conversion. As of the change, the conventional PlayStation 5 will be sold for 79,980 yen (R$ 3057), while its digital version will cost 72,980 yen, or approximately R$ 2800.
PlayStation 5 accessories will also become more expensive
Sony says that official PlayStation 5 accessories that will see their prices increase include the DualSense, DualSense Edge, and PlayStation VR2 controllers. In addition, products such as the PlayStation Portal, DualShock 4, and the Pulse Explore Wireless and Pulse Elite Wireless headsets will also see price increases.
The increase in values comes at a time when rumors indicate that the company is preparing to introduce more powerful hardware to the market. Known as the PS5 Pro, it is expected to hit stores in 2024. for an even higher price and in line with several performance improvements.
In its latest sales report, Sony said it has sold 61 million PlayStation 5s worldwide, including 2.4 million in the last quarter. However, the console is already experiencing a slowdown in its sales, with sales declining at a faster pace than the company expected.
