While PCIE 5.0 is still reserved for more advanced motherboards today, the PCI-SIG group has announced this week PCIE 8.0, expected to be offered to consortium members from 2028. As always, the new specification doubles the capabilities of its previous generation, reaching 256GT/s.

This transfer rate means 256gbps per PCI lane. More specifically, as shown in the official table below, PCIE 8.0 theoretically will offer a transfer of up to 1TB/s to X16 connected components. The first generation of the interface reached 8GB/s in the same configuration.

“According to Artificial Intelligence (IA) and other intense data use applications continue to climb quickly, the demand for PCIE technology will be sustained in the long run due to its high band, scalability and efficient efficiency,” said Reece Hayden, an analyst at ABI Research.

“Data centers are already preparing to implement PCIE 6.0 technology and are showing great interest in PCIE 7.0 specification. The introduction of PCIE 8.0 ensures further that industry band requirements will be supported in the future.”

PCIE 8.0 will offer new connector technology as well

The PCI-SIG group has not yet gone into detail, but listed among the main highlights for PCI 8.0 the introduction of a “technology for new connector”, which should bring improvements to the current connection usually used in PCIE interfaces.

As has been the case so far for the interface, the group ensures backwards with previous PCI generations, which will turn about 30 years when PCIE 8.0 starts to be available.

As a curiosity, it is worth mentioning that today, on the 5th, we had rumors about AMD’s next socket, the AM6. It is also planned for the year 2028, but bringing compatibility to PIE 6.0 yet. As always, it is normal for new technologies such as PCIE 8.0 to be first introduced into the professional segment, such as date centers and servers.
