OpenAI, creator of ChatGPT, may invest in its own chips

Currently one of the leading names in the field of artificial intelligence, OpenAI, creator of ChatGPT, may be preparing to abandon the partnership with NVIDIA that has already made a lot of money for both companies. According to The Information, the company is negotiating with several companies to facilitate the creation of a line of proprietary chips.

The initiative would be encouraged by Microsoft, which owns OpenAI, and would have resulted in advanced talks with Broadcom. Originating within Hewlett-Packard, the North American company is known for offering solutions for data centers, networks, software, broadband networks, storage and other industrial purposes.

Although not as well-known as NVIDIA, Broadcom would bring the advantage of its extensive knowledge and presence in various types of markets. With this, It has a market capitalization of $705.8 billion.surpassing the combined value of Intel (US$226.7 billion) and AMD (US$133.6 billion).

OpenAI project will take time to bear fruit

Even if OpenAI and Microsoft move forward with their plan to produce proprietary chips, they may still be slow to abandon their partnership with NVIDIA. With a market capitalization of $2.78 trillion, the company has a long history in the fields of hardware and artificial intelligence.

In other words, any initiative led by Broadcom would have great difficulty competing with the most current chips available on the market. Given the ever-increasing need for processing power to keep AI training models up to date, OpenAI doesn’t want to “fall behind” by using outdated hardware compared to its competitors.

However, CEO Sam Altman’s long-term plans are set to continue, ensuring that his company will own the entire development cycle of its proprietary AI. In addition to producing proprietary chips, the company will also be responsible for building and managing its own data centers.
