Launched on October 16th, the ROG Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X were met with mixed reception. If, on the one hand, the hardware of the notebooks was praised by critics, the performance of the devices (especially the most modest among them) and the way in which Windows 11 is integrated were not seen in such a positive way.
However, the Cyber Dopamine channel shows that opting for the operating system has a great advantage, which can increase the number of frames per second in a game by up to 32%. To do this, simply take advantage of the openness of the platform to install a Linux distribution, and thus unlock the potential of new laptops.
In a video published on YouTube, he shows that the Xbox ROG Ally X benefits greatly from Bazzitea system made to run on dedicated laptops. According to him, one of the games that showed the most performance improvements is Kingdom Come: Deliverance, but the advantages of Linux were not restricted to it.
Linux brings advantages to ROG Xbox Ally at higher voltages
Tests carried out by Cyber Dopamine show that while Bazzite’s advantages over Windows 11 are constant, they are more noticeable at higher voltages. Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, for example, runs at 62 FPS on the modified ROG Xbox Ally X, while the “factory” version reaches 47 FPS — all in 17W mode.
However, the difference drops from 37 to 35 frames per second when the 13W mode is used. The channel also shows tests carried out using the game Hogwarts Legacy, whose performance gains can reach 24%, depending on the voltage used.
However, in 13W mode, the title loses 2.63% of performance on Bazzite compared to the ROG Xbox Ally X using Windows 11. According to the YouTuber, the gains offered by the alternative system are consistent, with peak frames per second being reached during most of his gameplay.
To top it off, installing the Linux distribution also transforms the platform into a more traditional portable, making it easier to leave it at rest to resume a game session later. The downside is the loss of compatibility with some gamesespecially those whose anticheats only work on the Microsoft platform.
