India is looking to join the AI race that has taken over companies around the world. Ola Electric unveiled the Bodhi 1 this weekend, which will be the world’s first Indian AI processor. The chip is expected to launch in 2026, marking the start of a portfolio that already has other products announced.
Ola Electric, which has made its name selling electric motorcycles and mini vehicles, has announced three chips to kickstart its AI venture. The Bodhi 1 will soon be joined by the Ojas and Sarv 1 as well. The manufacturer has also confirmed a successor to its first AI component, promising the Bodhi 2 by 2028.
Bodhi 1 works with AI inference, being focused on processing LLMs and visual models, for example. Ojas Edge AI is the company’s customizable chip. In other words, Ola Electric will prepare it according to the customer’s needs, for cars, mobile, Internet of Things and so on.
Finally, Sarv 1 is based on ARM and is targeted at use in servers and data centers.
The company has tried to draw particular attention to the energy efficiency of India’s first AI chip. During the presentation, the company demonstrated that the Bodhi 1 outperforms an Nvidia GPU operating at 200W. However, no details of the configuration or even which Nvidia component was being used in the comparison were disclosed.
Bodhi 1 could be successful in China
As the folks at Tom’s Hardware rightly point out, Ola Electric could have a number of potential customers in China. As is well known, the US is currently imposing tough trade sanctions on its geopolitical rival, preventing its companies from exporting their best AI technologies to the country.
More about AI:
Therefore, the Bodhi 1 doesn’t need to be better than Nvidia’s high-end components to stand out in China. Ola Electric’s chip just needs to be better than the custom solutions that have been sold in the country and be more worthwhile than smuggling.
Furthermore, the geographical proximity between Asian countries should be another major attraction, helping to reduce the cost of transporting products. However, we do not know where the Bodhi 1 will be manufactured.
